Competitive balance measures and the uncertainty of outcome hypothesis in European football

Abstract Competitive balance is an important issue in professional sport general and European football particular. However, competitive difficult to quantify because competitiveness multi-dimensional particular sports are distinctive. We aim identify the most appropriate index for a holistic view of football. use data from eight domestic leagues over time span 60 years. The indices we consider specifically designed capture at different levels performance this way reflect peculiarities leagues. Our findings support longstanding uncertainty outcome hypothesis. A bivariate that captures top K places shown have highest association with attendance. seasonal champions’ domination also found large Finally, ranking mobility slightly higher attendance than performance. These results imply policy makers should these assess strategic decisions may influence balance.
